Year 3 and 4 Camp - Coopers Beach Christian Youth Camp

We all had a fantastic time last week at the Year 3 and 4 camp at the Coopers Beach Christian Youth Camp. We went swimming in the sea with the waves crashing on us, we searched for creatures in the rock pools, we went fishing off Whangaroa Wharf, we zoomed down the 80m waterslide individually and in trains, we conquered the confidence course, played basketball and bull rush and ate like kings and queens. It was great to see everyone working together and encouraging each other. The girls took on the boys in tug of war and proved tough but not tough enough.

Olympic Ambassador

Today we had an amazing Olympic Ambassador visit our school - Stacey Michelsen who plays hockey for the Black Sticks. She spoke to us about her journey to getting to the Olympics and what it was like at the Olympics. Stacey talked about the importance of playing a sport and then setting yourself goals. She also spoke about some of the Olympic values - one being Respect which is one of our school values. Stacey said, 'that you always have to be the best that you can be,' which is our school mission statement.  Her talk was very inspiring and lots of us want to go to the Olympics one day.

Pet and Show Day

Oink! Baa! Moo! Meow! The school was filled with lots of animals for their annual Pet and Show Day. We even had eels and a hedgehog. While everyone worked for the morning in class the judges went around and judged all the fantastic pet and creations in the library.
Bring! Bring! Everyone rushed out the door to see what their pet had come. Some children were really excited. "My eels came third,' shouted Ryan.
After morning tea we had the grand parade. Everyone that had brought an animal paraded around the ring.
Pet Day was lots of fun.

Greats and Grands Day

We had another very successful Greats and Grands day. The children shared speeches about their grandparents, the kapahaka group performed, our piano musicians performed and the whole school showed off their dance moves with jump jam. Our grandparents then enjoyed a visit to our classroom where they were treated with marshmallow treats and a poem about them. Then we had a lovely shared morning tea, with some amazing food. After morning tea we rotated around a range of old fashion games. Our morning ended with a game of Netball. The grandparents were very competitive and managed to win against our young, fit, fire flies team.

A Piglet Visits

We had a very interesting visitor into our classroom this morning. Lilly's mum Annette and Roger brought their pet piglet Peppa to visit us. They picked Peppa up from the wild when it was very small. It likes to tear up newspaper and have its tummy scratched.

Duffy Assembly

On Friday we had a visit from Kyle Mewburn an author who has written lots of books for children. He has written Duck is Stuck, Kiss Kiss Yuck Yuck, Blue Gnu just to name a few. He has also written two popular chapter book series Dinosaur Rescue and Dragon Knight. He told us about he became a writer after he spent lots of time doing boring jobs. He also shared with us about how he got some of his ideas for his stories.

He wrote lots of books that he sent to the publishers and they didn't like his story.
Showing us on of his picture books - Duck is Stuck.
Here he is showing two dinosaur rescue books - we had to spot the difference in the picture. One had a picture of a bare bottom and the other had censored written over the bare bottom because in one country they are not allowed this type of picture.

What a busy day of learning and having fun for Room 9. We started our day with doing our science experiments and starting our science boards for the Science Fair next week. At 12 o'clock Mr John Carter came and spoke to us and presented us with our Duffy Books. Then this afternoon we had another session with Mr Bell on the bikes. We learnt how to ride with one hand, use signals, look behind us as we ride and we played a cool game called foot down. TeAorangi was our champ!!!!
